02The Story

The bench above the lake that started it all

Boucherie Road and the slopes of Mount Boucherie hold the densest run of cellar doors in the Central Okanagan.

The Westside Wine Trail follows the west shore of Okanagan Lake through West Kelowna and on to Peachland. It is the biggest of the five routes, with 19 wineries, and the one most first-time visitors start with.

The heart of it is Boucherie Road, where Little Straw Vineyards Family Estate Winery, Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery, Quails' Gate Winery, Frind Estate Winery and Mission Hill Family Estate Winery sit minutes apart on the old volcanic bench above the water. Between the big estates are small family producers such as Rollingdale Winery Inc, Black Swift Vineyards, Grizzli Winery and Beaumont Family Estate Winery, so a day here can mix a landmark tasting room with a quiet one where the winemaker pours.

South of the bridge the road keeps going to Hainle Vineyards Estate Winery Ltd. and Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards at Greata Ranch, where vineyards drop toward the lake with fewer crowds and long views north.

Plan three or four tastings, book the busy summer weekends ahead, and leave the driving to a local tour such as Après Tours so everyone can taste.
